Motivational Factors Affecting ELT Students' Use of ChatGPT Learning Outcomes in Preparing for Writing Tasks: A Mixed-Methods Study

    Fırat, Hicran Bayraktaroğlu

The rapid rise of large language models such as ChatGPT is altering the landscape of English language education, influencing how learners approach writing, speaking, reading, and vocabulary work. Despite this shift, little is known about how English Language Teaching (ELT) majors—who must balance their roles as students and future educators—engage with these tools across different skill areas. To address this gap, the present study adopts a mixed-methods design to explore what motivates ELT students to use ChatGPT, drawing on a broad theoretical base that includes Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), the Hedonic Motivation System Adoption Model (HMSAM), Self-Determination Theory (SDT), Flow Theory, and Cognitive Load Theory (CLT).The quantitative phase involved 100 randomly selected ELT students studying in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, who were invited through proportionate stratified random sampling across nine universities, while qualitative insights were gathered from interviews with 12 students recruited through purposive sampling. The findings indicate that intrinsic motivation, perceived usefulness, hedonic appeal, and ease of use strongly shape students’ intentions to work with ChatGPT. Writing stood out as the skill that students found most intrinsically and hedonically engaging, particularly because the tool helped reduce anxiety and support idea development. Speaking-related motivation was tied largely to affective benefits such as increased confidence and reduced communication apprehension. In contrast, reading and vocabulary use were driven more by practical, efficiency-oriented considerations. Interview data also revealed persistent ethical concerns, including plagiarism, over-dependence, and fairness in assessment, alongside professional-identity-driven reflections on the pedagogy and assessment. Overall, the study underscores the importance of strengthening AI literacy, establishing ethical guidelines, and rethinking assessment practices within ELT programs. It contributes a skill-specific, theoretically grounded perspective on how future English teachers navigate AI-mediated learning environments.

Explainable Attention-Guided Swin Transformer Networks for Brain Tumor Segmentation from 3D MRI

Ranjbarzadeh, Ramin; Keles, Ayse; Anari, Shokofeh; Zarbakhsh, Payam; Bendechache, Malika; Atulya K., N.; Dharm Singh, J.; Durgesh Kumar, M.; Joshi, A.

This research presents a two-stage cascaded 3D segmentation approach designed for accurate brain tumor delineation in multimodal MRI data. The design incorporates a Swin Transformer backbone alongside Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (ASPP) and Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) blocks during the coarse segmentation phase to extract comprehensive, multi-scale contextual data. The second stage enhances the preliminary output with a class-wise attention decoder, which highlights tumor subregions—specifically, edema, necrotic core, and enhancing tumor—by masking the original input with the coarse predictions. The model employs a weighted Tversky loss to address the substantial class imbalance present in tumor segmentation tasks. Extensive experiments were executed on the BraTS 2020 dataset, incorporating preprocessing processes such as volume cropping and scaling to 128 × 128 × 128, with evaluation completed across training, validation, and test sets divided in a 70%–15%–15% ratio. The model exhibited exceptional accuracy in identifying tumor regions, with a Dice score of 0.99 for healthy tissue and above 0.5 for tumor subregions. The investigation of ROC curves and confusion matrices further substantiated the reliability of the forecasts. To improve model transparency, layer-wise Grad-CAM heatmaps were produced, illustrating the transition of attention from general background in first levels to concentrated tumor localization in subsequent layers. The proposed method attains competitive segmentation performance while providing a more interpretable and therapeutically pertinent answer. The results underscore the efficacy of integrating coarse-to-fine cascaded architectures with transformer-based encoders and attention-driven refinement for brain tumor segmentation.

Combined Surgical and Orthodontic Treatment for Eruption of the Impacted Premolar Due to a Dentigerous Cyst

Özant, Ahmet; Ersalıcı, İsmet; Temelci, Ali; Minervini, Giuseppe; Badnjević, A.; Gurbeta Pokvić, L.

The dentigerous cyst (DC) is a prevalent developmental odontogenic cyst, characterized by an epithelial-lined pathological cavity that is closely related to an unerupted or impacted tooth crown. This cyst is predominantly observed in third molars, maxillary canines, and premolars, and is typically asymptomatic. However, over time bone resorption, minimal bone expansion and tooth displacement may occur. In this case, a 14-year-old female patient was referred to our clinic for a routine radiographic and clinical examination. Radiographic examination revealed an impacted mandibular second premolar tooth and a cystic appearance around the crown of an impacted premolar tooth. CBCT slices showed that the tooth had a close proximity to the mental foramen. After a fine needle aspiration biopsy, the histopathological examination showed that the lesion was an odontogenic cyst which was latterly reported as a dentigerous cyst with the anamnesis and radiographic features. Surgery was planned for the patient under local anesthesia. The visible part of the cyst was removed, the crown of the tooth was exposed and an orthodontic button was placed. The orthodontic force was applied 3 weeks following the surgery to extrude the tooth. After 10 months, the tooth had erupted to the occlusion. Since dentigerous cysts attach to the tooth at the enamel-cementum junction, they can be treated by occlusion of the related tooth. It has been shown that successful treatment can be performed with a conservative approach with surgical and orthodontic planning. In this way, since there is no need for extraction and prevent a possible nerve injury.
